Iridient X-Transformer is a utility that can be used to convert Fujifilm RAF images to DNG format using Iridient Digital's high quality RAW processing algorithms. The Iridient X-Transformer 1.1 update has been released! This Iridient X-Transformer update includes support for the Fujifilm X-T3, XF10, bug fixes and other improvements. This release now has official support for macOS 10.14 (Mojave) including automatic Dark Mode switching. Learn More. Download Free Trial. About Iridient X—Transformer. Iridient X-Transformer is an application from the makers of Iridient Developer. The software converts Fuji X-Trans RAW files to DNG from the native RAF, and during the process demosaics the images using Irident’s own engine.
I use Adobe Lightroom as my raw processing software of choice and I have done so since it was first released. Back then I was a Canon shooter but for the last several years I’ve been shooting more and more Fuji to the point where as I write I’ve not shot using my Canon gear for over a year.
As a Fuji shooter I have been aware of the raw processing software “Iridient Developer” for quite some time. I have often been astonished by the apparent difference in the rendering of Fuji raw files between Adobe Lightroom and Iridient Developer. Iridient seemed to create cleaner, clearer, sharper renderings of the same image. This seemed all the more remarkable as Iridient Digital is a “small” company, indeed to the best of my knowledge a “one-man band”.
Impressed as I was by the results I was seeing being obtained using Iridient Developer it was sadly not for me. The software was only available for Mac OS and I switched back from Mac OS to Windows several years ago now. As a keen amateur photographer (ie – not somebody who makes a lot of money out of photography) I was not going to switch back to using Macs again just to be able to run Iridient Developer, no matter how much better it might make my results.
Last year I read rumors that Iridient were working on “something for Windows”. This was exciting news for me as I found it galling that despite much improvement over the last couple of years Lightroom still didn’t seem to render Fuji raw files as well as Iridient did.
I had been checking the Iridient Digital web site for any further news of a Windows release for several months and then just as it seemed like nothing was ever going to happen I seem to have missed the notification by about a week.
Iridient X-Transformer isn’t a full-blown raw processing package. What it does is de-mosaic the Fuji raw file and store it as a dng (Digital Negative) file. Once X-Transformer has produced the dng file you are free to import it into any raw processor you like which supports the dng format – for example Adobe Lightroom.
Over the last year or so I had been thinking that Lightroom had caught up a lot and maybe there wouldn’t be a whole lot of difference between X-Transformer results and a native Lightroom import.
I was wrong!
The comparison I posted at the head of this post shows very clearly just how much of a difference there is (click on the image to see the full size version). This is a photo I took of my daughter during a visit to Bolsover Castle on December 27th 2016. It just happened to be one of my favourite portraits of her for quite a while so it was foremost in my mind and I thought that the catch-lights in her eyes along with her eyelashes and eyebrows would give X-Transformer a good test. Lots of fine detail in the shot.
The original Lightroom import to the left looks almost like there’s something over the top of the image which makes it less distinct, although at the time I took it I was pleased enough with the photo. The eyebrows and lashes almost seem to smear together, the catch-light just isn’t crisp.
Looking at the X-Transformer processed version to the right is like putting on a pair of spectacles.
And when I say “processed” both of these images are before I’ve done any actual edits on them. The only processing has been importing into Lightroom and in the case of the X-Transformer version being converted to a dng and then importing into Lightroom. Everything is set to “default” for both versions.
The results appear to be so clear, so crisp and so sharp that I think I might need to tone down my homemade Lightroom preset for sharpening X-Trans files.
The image shown in the comparison was produced with X-Transormer before I paid to register it – an event which happened very shortly after I carried out the comparison! It cost me around £32 to purchase the software and this seems like very good value for money to reveal the true brilliant performance of all of my Fuji X-Mount lenses (and my X100T).
I intend to add X-Transformer into my Lightroom workflow by pre-processing all of my Fuji shot photos though it before importing the batch to Lightroom. X-Transformer can also be used from within Lightroom as an “external editor” (once configured according to the instructions included in the help file) – right click a photo in Lightroom and send it to X-Transformer.
It seems that X-Transformer is very aptly named. It really does transform your X-Trans photos if you’re used to the results Adobe Lightroom produces.
Edit : A bit of an oversight maybe not to show the whole of the image I used for the comparison in this post. This is after processing in Lightroom but not shown at full size.

New versions of the Fujifilm X-Trans film style presets for Iridient Developer 3 are now available!
The color presets for APS-C models have been improved, especially for the extreme ends of the tonal range (dark shadows and bright highlights). The Vivid style in particular should show much better results in dark shadows and very bright colors in many cases should show more gradual transition to clipping and better saturation. These film emulation style presets are intended to produce a similar look to the X-Trans in-camera conversion styles for Classic Chrome, Standard/Provia, Soft/Astia, Vivid/Velvia, ProNegStd, ProNegHi, Monochrome, Monochrome+Ye, Monochrome+R, Monochrome+G and Sepia. These new Iridient Developer 3 presets can be downloaded here and a ReadMe file is included with installation instructions:
Film Style Preset Pack 5 for APS-C models (X100T, X-T1, X-E2, X-M1, X100S, X-E1 and X-Pro1) (9.6MB zip file).
Film Style Preset Pack 1 for compact models (XQ2, X30, XQ1 and X20) (9.8MB zip file).

Iridient Developer 3!
I'm happy to announce the final release of Iridient Developer 3! This major new release contains many new features and significant improvements throughout. Some of the key new features include:
- Multiple new RAW processing (demosaic) algorithms for both Bayer and X-Trans sensors from super high detail to smoother, lower artifact rendering styles plus monochrome specific RAW conversions.
- Two great new sharpening methods, Iridient Reveal and High Pass, have been added to the already highly regarded sharpening routines. Iridient Reveal in beta form has already been getting rave reviews and combines some of the best aspects of several of my previous methods including aspects of both traditional edge contrast enhancement techniques and deconvolution.
- New options for adjusting overall tonality including an adaptive 'Fill Light' style exposure adjustment and pixel neighborhood adaptive Highlights and Shadows adjustments.
- New Clarity adjustment for enhancing mid-tone contrast and reducing haze. This adjustment includes a number of variants for targeting different styles from a crisp, landscape type effect to softer, more portrait suited styles.
- New noise reduction methods provide much better results when combined with some of the new sharpening methods, especially when using very strong sharpening. At high levels some color smearing has been reduced while providing comparable or even better overall color noise reduction than the previous v2 methods. The new Luminance Grain Smoothness adjustment provides much better retention of overall image sharpness than the previous Luminance Smoothing method while being even more effective at reducing critical noise. Depending on specific adjustments used and image content, the new noise reduction can also be up to twice as fast as the previous v2 methods.
- Several all new monochrome mixer conversion methods which can radically reduce noise and provide even better image detail especially when using strong red biased filter type presets. Several options including direct access to low level RAW linear data as well as more perceptual, color managed mixing styles.
- Two new monochrome toning methods including Split Toning and Mono Tone plus many presets for common toning styles such as Sepia, Cyanotype, Platinum and more.
- New support for saving presets (or settings subsets) to disk which makes applying only specific adjustments, such as only sharpening, to images much easier. Also adds the ability to organize the Settings popup menu by sub-folders for grouping commonly used presets together.
- New dialog for copying/pasting settings subsets which makes choosing multiple adjustment options much easier than before when there was only a limited set of subsets available for selection by menu item.
- Greatly improved preview window approximation of various 'Detail' processing stages (clarity, sharpening, noise reduction) when displaying at small scale sizes.
- Significant improvements have been made to many existing processing methods and controls as well including Brightness, Saturation, Contrast and Tone Curves.
- Greatly simplified color management setup and configuration. Still features all the low level color management control of prior versions (and more), but now much easier to configure for the most common use cases.
New RAW camera support includes:
Olympus: E-M5 Mark II now includes 40 megapixel high resolution mode as well!
The complete list of over 620 supported RAW camera models can be viewed here.

This update fixes a Fill Light bug introduced in the previous beta 4 version and a couple remaining issues specific to 10.10 (Yosemite). The documentation has now been fully updated for all new functionality and other changes in version 3. The preview approximation for sharpening at lower scale sizes been greatly refined as well.
This release now has full support for saving settings adjustment subsets (or 'presets'), for example just sharpening adjustments, to disk and the settings popup menu can now also be organized by subfolder groupings. The copy/paste subset support has now also been extended to all of the new version 3 adjustments and features a new dialog picking and choosing what to copy rather than have a fairly limited choice of sub menus.
All camera defaults for RAW files have been transitioned over to my new 'Iridient Reveal' sharpening method which has been getting rave reviews! Color management options have been cleaned up and re-arranged to provide a simpler interface for those that are less familiar with color management while still providing the same low level control over color management options as found in earlier versions for those who want to be able to set up color management exactly how they like it.
